A slipped disc is present when the jelly-like center of an affected disc called the nucleus pulposus escapes from the bottom of the vertebra. Sharp, sudden pain and nerve irritation are the two main results of this condition.
A herniated disc is the intensified condition of a slipped disc that results in the jelly-like center (nucleus pulposus) being pushed out farther. This can cause a decrease in the function of surrounding nerves and more severe pain.
